[ Amaryllis (Hippeastrum 'Red Pearl') | Posted on December 18, 2016 ]

Red Pearl is a spectacular Amaryllis. Mine is tall with large blossoms, which are a very rich, intense shade of dark red. The petals are wide, giving the bloom a very full look. One of my favorites so far this bloom season.

[ Hosta 'Hottsy Tottsy' | Posted on August 19, 2016 ]

Hottsy Tottsy is a nice, bright golden-yellow, medium-sized hosta. Color stays bright all summer. In my garden it is a moderate grower , Good substance. A nice contrast to other hostas growng nearby. Well worth a spot in a shady garden.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'She') | Posted on January 5, 2016 ]

It's interesting to me that the pod parent of 'She' is 'Eye Candy' which is a Keppel BB from 2004.....

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Ovation') | Posted on October 31, 2015 ]

At the time of its introduction in 1969, Ovation became the standard by which the pink irises were judged. It remained the standard for several years. Nowadays, pinks are getting better all the time.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Tahitian Sunset') | Posted on October 18, 2015 ]

Tahitian Sunset is one of the most satisfying roses that I have in my garden. The plant grows and blooms well. The blossoms have very nice classic HT form. and are pleasant even when full blown. Color varies according to the season, but is always pleasant. This is one that I will replace if I happen to lose it.

[ Crocosmia 'Mistral' | Posted on October 3, 2015 ]

[ Dahlia 'Ketchup & Mustard' | Posted on September 26, 2015 ]

Dahlia Ketchup & Mustard is a Dahlia regularly found on the winners table at shows here in Utah. Color is bright red with yellow border and tips. Form is Formal Decorative, 8 to 10 inches, and on nice stems for show and cutting. Plants grow 5 feet tall and hold flowers up. Nice in the garden or as a cut flower.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Laced Cotton') | Posted on September 11, 2015 ]

Laced Cotton is often listed as pure white. While it is mostly white, if you look at the hafts you will see some purple haft marks. I have read a number of times that it is actually a plicata with little or no plicata markings.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Marilyn Monroe') | Posted on August 24, 2015 ]

People who show roses call their best show roses "bankers." I don't show, but if I did, this would be a regular entry. Nearly every bloom has perfect form and it produces blossoms all season. It is from a cross of Sunset Celebration, which it resembles, and St, Patrick. A favorite....

[ Potato (Solanum tuberosum 'Yukon Gold') | Posted on July 15, 2015 ]

If I want a baked potato I choose Russet. Most of the time for other potato dishes I choose Yukon Gold. Larger ones I peel and boil for mashed potatoes. Smaller ones I boil and mash, skin and all, and add sour cream, butter, garlic and some sliced green onions....we call this mashers. Great in potato salad. I often boil a few extra ones and put them in the refrigerator for a quick snack.......wonderful potatoes.

[ Hosta 'Cabaret' | Posted on July 15, 2015 ]

Cabaret looks a lot like Hanky Panky to me, so I went to the Hosta Library and wasn't surprised to find it is a sport of Hanky Panky. I would like to see them growing next to each other for a comparison. My Hanky Panky was planted among larger Hostas so I dug it up, gave it to a friend, and planted a larger Hosta in the empty space. It was OK but not a favorite to me. Cabaret wouldn't tempt me. It is down from Striptease, which has many mutations.

[ Hosta 'Dick Ward' | Posted on September 14, 2014 ]

When established, a mature clump of Hosta Dick Ward is a commanding presence in a shade garden. It makes a large clump. The color is nicely variegated and it changes and brighten as the season progresses. The leaves have good substance and are attractively corrugated. Deserving of a spot in a Hosta Garden.

[ Hosta 'Winter Snow' | Posted on September 14, 2014 ]

Hosta Winter Snow is a sport of the classic Hosta Sum and Substance. I haven't seen all of the introduced sports, but Winter Snow is the best. Color is a nice Granny Smith Apple green with a creamy white margin. Leaves are shiny with prominent veins, broad and lightly ruffled. Plant is semi-upright and growth rate is good. Highly recommended.

[ Spotted Spurge (Euphorbia maculata) | Posted on September 12, 2014 ]

This is a very difficult weed when it is in the lawn in my area. It is difficult to eradicate. I often see it where a lawn is edged with a string trimmer and the short grass doesn't compete well then. My neighbor mows his lawn too short, in my opinion, and he has lots of spurge. I have none.

[ Hosta 'Trifecta' | Posted on August 22, 2014 ]

Trifecta, a sport of popular Hosta Little Sunspot, is a nice addition to the selection of miniature Hostas. It has heart-shaped leaves, which feature three distinct colors, hence the name. The centers are white and are edged with an irregular streaky green border, and there are also golden splashes of color. It has attractive lavender flowers and so far has been a good grower. Mature size is suggested to be 6 inches high by 12 inches wide. This is a nice plant for those of us who have limited space.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Beyond Borders') | Posted on April 27, 2014 ]

Tall bearded iris 'Beyond Borders' is a 2012 introduction from Tasco. The color pattern of this iris is called "Emma Cook'. It has white standards and white falls richly banded blue violet It is an early bloomer in my garden and I like it. The pollen parent of 'Beyond Borders' is the popular award winning 'Queens Circle'. Nicely branched and increases well.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'My Beloved') | Posted on April 27, 2014 ]

Tall bearded iris 'My Beloved' was introduced in 2009 by Joe Ghio and is a very fine quality, pure white iris. It has wonderful form, grows and increases well, and produces strong show-quality stalks. It is a great addition to a bed of irises. It is proving to be a good parent for the hybridizer. I would recommend it.

[ Clematis 'Nelly Moser' | Posted on April 27, 2014 ]

As clematises go, Nelly Moser might be considered a classic. It is widely grown and has been so for a number of years. When well grown, it blooms heavily in the spring and reblooms later with fewer blossoms. Unfortunately, the flowers fade quickly, but it is still very attractive. It can be pruned moderately in early spring and lightly after spring bloom.

[ Petunia Crazytunia® Sparky | Posted on April 27, 2014 ]

There is nothing shy about this bright cheery petunia. A single plant would be an exclamation point in a mixed bed and a grouping of several plants would be spectacular. Nothing subtle here.

[ Foxglove (Digitalis Digiplexis® Illumination Flame) | Posted on April 27, 2014 ]

Digiplexis has a relatively short history in the gardening world. It is a very striking plant that came from a cross made in 2006 between a Digitalis and a related plant indigenous to the Canary Islands (Isoplexis, now reclassified as a synonym for Digitalis). It quickly caught the imagination of plant lovers and has won several horticultural awards. It is said to be well behaved in the garden and has a long bloom time, flowering most of the season from spring to fall. It grows best in full sun to light shade and likes to be watered about twice weekly. I haven't grown it in my own garden yet, but I saw it recently at a local well-respected nursery. I will be adding it to one of my beds.
