[ African iris (Dietes iridioides) | Posted on June 26, 2014 ]

Older clumps can get considerably larger than listed. I just divided a 10 year old clump this evening that was a little more than 3' wide.

[ Dwarf Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea glabra 'Helen Johnson') | Posted on June 20, 2014 ]

Although this plant is a dwarf, do not let it get ahead of you as it will try to revert to tall (not as tall as normal bougs but tall). I have 8-10 of these, and when they miss their haircuts, they put on some height (4 to 7 feet). They also tend to throw the occasional long switch that needs to be cut out.

[ Bougainvillea 'Raspberry Ice' | Posted on June 11, 2014 ]

I have 2 mature Bougainvillea 'Raspberry Ice" vines and both are considerably larger than listed (guessing 12-14' each). A great vine indeed. So much so that I ordered another one, which I received today.

[ Tropical Hydrangea (Dombeya elegans 'Pink Cloud') | Posted on June 2, 2014 ]

Reported to be moderately fast growing and drought tolerant once established. pH range is mildly acidic to mildly alkaline. Prune in the spring after flowering if desired.

[ Garlic (Allium sativum 'Music') | Posted on November 23, 2013 ]

Although highly rated, Music did poorly in my garden the one year I grew it. Not surprising as it is a hardneck listed for cooler areas (I am in zone 10) and higher elevations.

[ Garlic (Allium sativum 'Mild French') | Posted on November 23, 2013 ]

Smaller bulbs (12 per pound) with smaller cloves (12.75 cloves per bulb on the order I received). Is said to grow well in our hot, dry climate (originated in Texas) as well as the gulf coast and is considered to be an excellent keeper. An earlier maturing silverskin that is listed as mild.

The bulbs are made up of 3-4 rows of cloves. While the outer cloves are fair- to large-sized, there can be some tiny cloves internally.

[ Garlic (Allium sativum 'Georgian Crystal') | Posted on November 23, 2013 ]

From the Filaree order I received, there are 8 heads per pound, 3.75 cloves per bulb. Although the bulbs are mid-sized (2-2.25" in diameter), the 3-4 cloves inside are large to extra-large. Paper white outside, cloves are purplish brown,

Listed as a good choice for southern gardeners with 4-7 cloves per bulb. Long storing, milder flavor and good yields.

[ Softneck Garlic (Allium sativum 'Inchelium Red') | Posted on November 22, 2013 ]

Received from Filaree Garlic - 5 bulbs per pound, 9.8 cloves per bulb. Although listed as having 4 to 5 rows of clove per head, the ones I received had either just 1 row or a second partially filled row. The cloves, however, are extremely large and heavy. Inchelium Red is an artichoke type and, hence, should store well for 8-10 months.

[ Garlic (Allium sativum 'Chinese Purple') | Posted on November 22, 2013 ]

Received 10 heads per pound for an average of 8.8 cloves per bulb. Bulbs are purple and white. Said to be relatively "good" storing for a turban.

[ Garlic (Allium sativum 'Mexican Red Silver') | Posted on November 22, 2013 ]

Received 8 heads per pound, 21 cloves per head. Clove size is very inconsistent - innermost ring of cloves is tiny. Is said to be hot and strong when raw but light and low heat when baked.

[ Garlic (Allium sativum 'Early Red Italian') | Posted on November 22, 2013 ]

Size:

I just received planting stock from Filaree Garlic (in Washington State) and these are large compared to the other varieties. Full heads are running 2.4 - 2.8" in diameter and the cloves are averaging 1.6-1.8" in length and are extremely thick and fat. There are 5 bulbs per pound, averaging 12.6 cloves per head (I included the cloves that are growing about the upper stem in calculating the cloves per head). If counting the cloves only found in the head, there are 10.4 cloves per head. It is listed as typically having 11-21 cloves per bulb.

Odditiy:

2 of the 5 heads received have additional (large) cloves growing around the stem above/outside of the main bulb.

Type: Early Red Italian is a softneck garlic - Artichoke type.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Pandora's Treasure') | Posted on July 22, 2013 ]

Maryott's, on their website, noted that this was registered incorrectly and it is actually a dormant.

[ Five-Leaf Chocolate Vine (Akebia quinata 'Rosea') | Posted on July 7, 2013 ]

Can become invasive in parts of the country - well behaved in others. Fruit is 2-4" long, sausage-shaped, and ripens in September to October. The white pulp with tiny black seeds is said to be quite tasty.

By some reports, may grow up to 20 feet in one season. Climbs by twining.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Wedding Vow') | Posted on June 22, 2013 ]

There is another Iris being sold in Australia with the same name but it is different: White with warm white centers, gold fading to white beards.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Strikingly Dramatic') | Posted on June 22, 2013 ]

Maryott's changed bloom time from E to L based on performance there. Also, listed as Ev/SEv.

[ Sedge (Carex oshimensis 'Ice Cream') | Posted on June 5, 2013 ]

PP# 21,463. Reportedly a sport of Evergold.

[ Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa 'Camarosa') | Posted on June 4, 2013 ]

June-bearing strawberry. Although listed as a zone 8 or 9, it is commonly grown throughout zone 10 Southern California gardens.

[ Common Rush (Juncus effusus) | Posted on June 4, 2013 ]

Can be grown in 4" of standing water. Can help control erosion on stream and pond banks. Will self-seed. Plant in a tub sunk in mud or water to control spread by rhizomes.

[ Soft Rush (Juncus inflexus Graceful Grasses® Blue Mohawk®) | Posted on June 4, 2013 ]

can be grown with up to 3" of water over crown

[ Japanese Beauty Berry (Callicarpa japonica 'Snow Storm') | Posted on June 3, 2013 ]

New foliage emerges white and then fades to a speckled mix of green and white. Pinkish-purple berries hang from fall into winter, adding winter interest.
