Prairie
Ordered a flat of this sedge in January 2022 to use to stabilize and develop a strip of former lawn that is being redeveloped as a wildflower side garden on the north side of the house. Ordered from Prairie Nursery, Westfield, Wisconsin 53964. Arrived in good shape and will plant this week.

This plant is doing well in the water berm in the side yard. No more floods there. Not getting huge yet, but in time I believe it will. Seems to be overwintering fine in 6a SE Michigan in January 2023.
April 28, 2022: Obtained plant (Flat of sedge arrived by mail in good condition. Will plant this week.)

Notes: Dainty white, small plant, blooms early summer to early fall. Fine textured foliage.
Best tidied in early spring before active growth begins. Good in - Rock/Alpine, Border Edging, Herb Gardens, Container Planting

gray-green foliage from mid-summer to fall. Plant it near a pathway or seating area or in a container so that you can conveniently run your fingers through its leaves, releasing its wonderfully minty scent. Calamint is quite drought tolerant and makes a wonderful edging and rock garden plant. The Marvelette Series is a big improvement on older varieties, with a dense, compact habit and earlier, larger and more numerous blooms. It also blooms the first year from seed! Sow seeds indoors, 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting out into the garden. Deer resistant. Perennial. Summer to fall blooming. Height: 8" to 10".
Seed life: 2 to 3 years.
January 31, 2023: Seeds sown (Winter sown (partial packet from seed swap) in dixie cups inside a WS tote. )
April 11, 2023: Plant emerged
May 15, 2023: Plant emerged (Transferred seedlings to Earth boxes to grow on to larger size while on vacation.)

I love the gorgeous form of this unique flowering plant that grows from corms (seed as well.) Beautiful, deep red bloom in July, when garden is at peak. Divide it every 5 years. Dig down about a foot, use a fork. The corms are created each year on top of each other. They flower best if slightly compacted. So just divide a large root ball in two. The division will invigorate it. Plant deep to access moisture. Don't cut back the foliage if you are not moving them.

Dahlias
Perennials
Tender Perennial (Michigan)
Planted Collarettes and Pompon Dahlia seeds from Happy Green Shop in Ireland. Almost all germinated! Good germination rate. Started with Dixie Cups. Transplanted to Red Solo cups. Raised in the little greenhouse and did fine in the spring.

Pictured yellow flower collarette is from seedling that made 4 tubers and worked well as a low growing landscape dahlia. May blend well with City Lights in 2024.
March 3, 2022: Seeds sown (WS in jug. WS in jug. Ark of Taste says: Seeds are sown from February to July and transplanted after 3 weeks, full sun. When the plants reach a height of 30 cm, soil should be added to the base of the plants to encourage the development of tuberous roots. After about twelve weeks, dahlias will bloom for 4-6 weeks.
)
May 27, 2022: Plant Ended (Removed, Died, Discarded, etc) (Winter Sowing dahlias did not sprout from seed. Needs heat: Cocoxochitl Chingonxs from Truelove Seeds via Pennsylvania. No sprouts. Too bad. I will try growing again next spring.

February 4, 2023: Seeds sown (Planted seeds from Happy Green Shop from Ireland. Also planted more 2 year old seeds, Cocoxochitl Chingonxs from Truelove Seeds via Pennsylvania, 2022 sowed indoors using heat mats. )
February 9, 2023: Seeds germinated (Sprouted! Heat mats and humid domes, using Dixie cups worked great. Out of 36 Dixie cups (mix of Diva, Pompon and these seeds) all but 5 sprouted. Good rate of germination.)
March 21, 2023: Potted up (Moved to greenhouse to give the seedlings more room. Setting up heater to keep above 40 degrees at night and closer to 55 - 60 during the day.)
June 2, 2023: Transplanted (Transplanted Planted several of these in the front yard flower bed in front of the front porch. Several have buds on them.)
November 25, 2023: Maintenance performed (Dug up a small dahlia clump in the front yard on a frigid day. There were four or so small tubers attached to the plant still with it's sprouting Dixie cup attached. Preparing it for winter storage in the garage this year, watching the temps with a Govee temperature sensor.)

Classic cottage garden plant. Needs staking. Can be high maintenance. Will see how year two goes. Needs staking and protection from slugs. Needs fertile soil, fertilization, and good drainage. Cultivar includes 'Emerald Pacific Mix" Winter Sown in 2022.

This plant is doing very well in a large pot, two blooms from it in 2022. Plan to take cuttings in 2023.

Planted out "Emerald Pacific Mix" Delphiniums in June 2022 somewhere in the new south facing border. (May have gotten swallowed up in roses and other plants. Also winter sowed a 2nd batch this January, noted in plant events.
