Acquisition Year 2015
A beautiful cultivar named by Harold Epstein after his wife, Esta. It was the first named seedling ever introduced from his garden. Notable for its large flowers with dark lavender inner-sepals and pale lavender spurs held against purple new spring foliage. It grows 6-8" tall in bloom, with a second flush of new leaves to 12". Small leaflets. One of the earliest grandiflorums to bloom in spring. February 20, 2015: Obtained plant (shipped June 05, 2015 Garden Visions - qty 1)

Acquisition Year 2022
Harold Epstein bought this imposing plant in Japan, nicknaming it "Red Queen". As far as we can determine, it was not a named cultivar. Large, vivid, rose-red flowers peek out from beneath huge leaflets that may grow to 6" long and 4" wide. A reddish second spring growth flush reaches to 14". The fall foliage of this giant sometimes turns yellow with an overlay of pink/orange/red. A vigorous, bold-texture plant that makes a substantial clump over time. ***2003 Cobblewood Introduction***
A large, lively, textural garden plant - full of movement. This was a spontaneous seedling between E. grandiflorum f. flavescens 'La Rocaille' and E. grandiflorum 'Yubae' from the garden of Harold Epstein. The medium-large, acutely tapered leaves stack in overlapping layers giving the appearance of flowing water. In spring, purple stippling is strongest at leaf edge, with an irregular mosaic of purple and green in the center, shading to green at the petiole. Large flowers gush forth on stems angled upward along the fringes of the foliage. Deep wine-purple sepals angle back from white spurs that flush amethyst near the narrow cup. 16" in bloom. No second growth flush.

Common in the U.K., but quite rare in the U.S., Darrell received his original start of this cultivar from Dan Hinkley upon their first meeting in 1995. 'White Queen' has handsome, medium-sized, dark green arrow-shaped leaflets on stems to 14". It produces no second growth flush. The edges of leaflets are flushed red in spring, while masses of large pure white flowers bloom just below the foliage. May 11, 2022: Obtained plant (Garden Vision Epimediums - qty 1)

Acquisition Year 2018
A cold hardy clone with HUGE, butter-yellow flowers. Named by plantsman Jerry Flintoff, its enormous, heart-shaped leaflets can reach to over 6" long and 4 1/2" wide. Spreads 6-12" a year. Takes 2-3 years to establish. Flowers emerge before the leaflets unfurl in spring. E. koreanum puts up only one set of leaves per node each season. If the leaf bud is damaged, the rhizome will lay dormant until the following spring. Makes a great bold-textured, vigorous groundcover for large areas. Expanding new leaves hide the dying bulb foliage. 15" tall. April 2, 2018: Obtained plant (Garden Vision Epimediums - qty 1)

Acquisition Year 2022
Native to the Caspian forests of northern Iran, the late David Barker of Chelmsford, Essex, U.K. shared this in 1998. Sprays of smaller, bright lemon-yellow flowers with tiny brown spurs erupt in early spring to 7". Taller and leafier (to 12") than E. p. ssp. colchicum, with less substance to the foliage. Has 9 medium-sized evergreen leaflets per leaf vs. 3-5. New leaflets are a clear spring-green with a slight rose flush. The earliest E. pinnatum to flush out in spring. Spreads by 8" rhizomes. Drought tolerant. May 11, 2022: Obtained plant (Garden Vision Epimediums - qty 3)

***2001 Cobblewood Introduction***
Don Elick sent Darrell this plant as "true" E. sempervirens. True it might be and while its large flowers are the usual white, with typical semi-evergreen leaves, the new spring foliage is anything but. Emerging a vibrant cherry red, it later turns green leaving a cherry edge before greening up for the season.

Named by Dick Weaver in 1995, but Darrell thinks he never introduced it. He said, "the foliage seems almost varnished while young. It virtually glistens and it is still very glossy" (in mid-June). Dick's original plant was from Leola Fraim of Waltham, MA in 1984. She received it from Florence Shaw in 1968. Leaflets remain glossy all season here, on stems to 6". White flowers.
