EARLY SPRING SEED EXTRAVAGANZA #1 - 2024 - Hortaholic - My garden fall 2023 from 4 female trees. Fragrant and flirty as they flutter in spring breezes. Every garden "needs" one! Slow growing small trees. 2 original 15 years or so ago now about 10' x 10'. 4 volunteers have reached flowering. Large leaves look a little exotic. I like to plant a clematis at the base to give a surprise contrast later! Open growth habit at base allows planting bulbs and perennials around them. Fleshy fruits edible. I tasted one. Eh. Ok. Maybe a survival choice. Sheffield Seeds lists 13 seeds for $7.95, with 83% germination. Try putting them in moist cold now til spring, then room temperature. Plant any that germinate in 60-90 days, return others to refrigeration until spring of 2025. One source says not all need cold stratification. Note: as I indicated, Fringetree has female (fruiting) and male trees. You need one of each for fruit but not for flowers. Some claim the male flowers are showier but I don't see a difference with mine. I don't know what proportion of each is expected from seed. Inheritance of dioeciousness has not been well studied. Traditional uses from Wikipedia. I haven't tried these and am not recommending. Just noting for growers with these interests: "The dried roots and bark were used by Native Americans to treat skin inflammations. The crushed bark was used in treatment of sores and wounds." Note the common name is spelled as one word. Zones 3 to 9. |

MIG-2024 An all-black garbanzo, also known as Ceci Neri, in Italy is VERY unique! These garbanzo beans look as if they have been covered in activated charcoal but don't let their color intimidate you. They have a nice firm texture with a nice earthy, nutty flavor. They are denser than a classic garbanzo making them ideal for salads, stews, or baked dishes. The plants produce medium-sized bushes that, once fully dried, can be shucked as with other garbanzo bean varieties. |
