antsinmypants's Plant List: Vines

A note from antsinmypants
Feel free to ask about anything in my list you may be interested in. I'm always looking to trade. Just because something isn't in my want list doesn't necessarily mean I don't want it & just because something I have isn't marked for trade doesn't mean it isn't available for trade. I stay busy so don't always get around to updating.

In flower from Apr to May, and the seeds ripen from Sep to Oct. The flowers are monoecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant)The plant is not self-fertile.

Akebia prefers sandy soils with good drainage, and regular watering, though it is drought-resistant. Germination: Lightly scarify seeds with a nail file, and soak in warm water for 24 hours. Surface sow seeds in a pot, mist the soil and sprinkle a small amount of sand or seed-starting soil over the seeds.

soak seed for 24hrs then place in moist peat or sand, in a polythene bag, not sealed, in the fridge for about 6 weeks. Sow in pots, but don't cover the seed, since they need light to germinate. Keep warm. Ideal Sowing Period: Spring, if using a fridge, late autumn if using natural stratification.

Zones 4 through 9.

6th Annual NFTSRSS - poisondartfrog - 2021

To germinate Aristolochia elegans seeds, first, prepare a seed starting tray or small pots filled with a well-draining seed starting mix, such as a blend of peat moss and perlite. Ensure the soil is evenly moist but not waterlogged. Since Aristolochia elegans seeds have a hard outer coat, scarification is beneficial for better germination. Lightly scarify the seed coat with sandpaper or a sharp knife. Then, soak the seeds in room temperature water for about 24 hours to further soften the seed coat. After scarification and soaking, sow the seeds evenly over the surface of the soil and gently press them into the soil with your fingertips. Cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil. Place the tray or pots in a warm location with indirect sunlight, maintaining a temperature between 70-80°F (21-27°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged by misting regularly or using a gentle watering can. Germination typically occurs within 2-4 weeks. Once the seedlings emerge, provide adequate spacing if growing in trays or transplant them into individual pots when they have developed a few sets of true leaves. Continue to care for the seedlings with proper watering, light, and nutrients as they grow into mature Aristolochia elegans plants.

Zones 8-12.

DND's All Seeds Swap #9 (2022) - Phytocraft - 2021

also known as Shan Yao, one of the true Yams and it is very good food.
I would grow it, it also is a medicinal and the flavor is very nice.

I first found out about this yam from a Japanese family that lived across the street from me in California.
He and I exchanged a lot of methods and techniques over a 4 year period (I even worked at his nursery for a year).

Remember the leaves oppose directly across from each other on the edible species of true yams.

Edible species of Dioscorea have opposite leaves whilst poisonous species have alternate leaves.

Can take 3 to 5 years from seed to harvest.

Zones 5 -12.
