  Pavonia lasiopetala

Pavonia lasiopetala (Texas Rock Rose). In my zone (9a), grows to Be 3-4'H x 4-5'W. Chihuahuan desert native deciduous perennial shrub. Tolerates clay soil & drought. May be short lived, but reseeds readily (but not aggressively). Full sun. Fast/moderate grower. Does not like to be transplanted. Great rebloom without deadheading, proportional in size to the most recent rain. Has at least some blooms on it all spring, summer, and fall, and loads up with green buds for a big show after every big rain. Neither the leaves nor the flowers ever looks thirsty, tired, diseased, or rain-beaten. No fragrance. I only wish that I liked hot pink more! If you love bold color and you live in the subtropics, you MUST have this plant! Stick it in the ground where it has space to sprawl, and walk away.

Angelonia (Angelonia angustifolia Serena™ Purple)

Ripped out. It's perennial in my zone, but even the lightest frost will turn it to ugly black twigs in my zone. NEEDS light, loamy or sandy soil. The roots won't penetrate moderately amended clay soil at all.

Died after transplanting. Ladybird Johnson says it can take full shade. It will survive. but it will grow sideways reaching for sun. Needs part shade. The berries are a COOL pink, and clash terribly with the scarlet red or salmon pink of Turk's cap.

I've tried 3 varieties of clethra alnifolia, and all 3 have looked fine for a few months (but not grown at all), and then died. They are often on lists of clay-tolerant plants, but I think they need acidic soil, and I have neutral-pH clay. Won't be trying this species again.
