A note from Bonehead

I am located in north Snohomish County, Washington, Zone 8b, a temperate rain foresty region. I rarely get snow, extreme cold, or extreme heat. Global warming, however, is changing the last one and we now get summer temps that are uncomfortably hot for me (anything over 30 C). I use this feature as a mini-database of my plants - both those within my tended beds/yard and those in my wild areas. The dates for plant events (budding, flowering, etc.) are ranges, not necessarily inclusive on both ends.

Burning Bush (Euonymus alatus)	Have Shrub	Brilliant red fall color, followed by tiny orange berries. Shrub border, front field. Breaks dormancy mid Mar
Wintercreeper (Euonymus fortunei var. radicans 'Emerald Gaiety')	Have Shrub	2011 outcropping. Ground cover. Feed in spring before growth begins. Shear to shape. Classic Evergreen Shear close to ground mid Mar to keep short

Dwarf Witch Alder (Fothergilla gardenii 'Blue Mist')	Have Action Shrub Aromatic	This blooms at the same time as the Sam cherry. Sam's blossoms are pure white and these are off-white and end up looking dingy. I think it's a dwarf, so figure out new spot for it. Marla has mowed it over more than once. 2009 kitchen bed. Bigleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla)	Have Shrub	Cut last year's flowering canes to ground, others to 2' in early spring. Mulch with peat. Front bed. 2017 failed to thrive, stayed very low (maybe 1-2' tall) with wimpy blooms and always seemed underwatered and limp, despite hand watering with porch plants. Emerges late Feb Blooms late Apr - late Jul
