Leeks are grown in trenches so that the leaf bases can be covered with soil in order to increase the size of the white portion.

Scottish heirloom leek was introduced in the 1830s near Edinburgh, Scotland with a delicious, sweet, subtle onion flavor.

Very winter-hardy plants with blue-green white stalks 7-10" long and 1 1/2" in diameter.

You can plant leeks as early as two weeks before your last-expected spring frost. Here in New York's Hudson Valley (zone 5-b), I plant leek seedlings between late April and mid-May.

Maturity: 120 days.
