Now we’ll go into more detail, showing individual plants and how they'll be spaced in the beds.

Recommended spacing between plants:

beans (pole) .........  6"
cucumbers (trellised)..10"
lettuce (leaf) .........  3"
squash (bush) ...... 18"
tomatoes (bush) ... 24"

Peas can be planted 3 to 4 weeks before the average last frost date.

And finally, here’s the planting schedule:

  • Early spring (3 to 4 weeks before last frost date): Sow peas on north side of trellis.

  • Two weeks before last frost date: Make first sowing of lettuce. Make successive sowings of lettuce every 2 weeks.

  • Around the last frost date: Sow squash, cucumber, and bean seeds.

  • One week after last frost date: Plant tomato transplants (and squash and cucumber transplants if you are using them instead of direct sowing.)

As the garden takes shape, we’ll tuck in some annual flowers along the borders.

(We’ll create a detailed planting calendar in the next class.)
