After nearly two months where we only had 4 days of measurable rain in my neighborhood, we are having another good soaking rain here! This makes the third good soaking day this week. Sunday, Wednesday, and now Saturday. God is spacing the rain out really nicely too! I know all of my plants thank Him! I know I do!!!
I went out to check my plants this morning and lo and behold, what did I see? One of the Iris divisions I replanted in my center island is actually sprouting a baby! Wow! That is so cool! I was originally worried that I didn't know anything about dividing Iris clumps. I learned and tried it, and it seems to be successful so far! Next year will be the true test. But if everything goes the way it is so far I think I'm off to a good start.
I also am happy with the new growth on my transplanted Acanthus! It seems to be happy in its new location. I now have four new leaves coming up! Yea!
If you're wondering where the fourth leaf is, its between the stem of the biggest new leaf and the medium sized new one. You really have to scroll in to see it. It's just coming out of the ground.
Well, Yvonne and I survived the trip to Leesburg for our meet and greet yesterday! What a fun couple of days! We drove up on Monday and got together with some friends of ours in Chantilly.
Then crashed at the Best Western Motel in Leesburg. Tuesday started with meeting everyone at Spanky's for breakfast. The food was good and I liked making some new gardening friends.
That was followed by a tour of one of the nurseries in the area. (Sorry, I don't remember the name of the place). And what a beautiful setting it was too! Yvonne even came home with a new plant!
The little butterfly on the Black-Eyed Susan looks like an F-35 Jet. Look close at its shape!
Checked this morning and saw the dirt being pushed up by what is probably a second leaf growing up from the rootball of the transplanted Acanthus! Yea! I gave it a bigger than usual drink of water this morning as a reward!
Spent most of the day deep watering my Azalea bushes. With almost no rain for two months they definitely need some supplemental moisture. Can't do anything about the heat though.
Had three roses bloom on my Golden Showers rose with a ton of buds. Went out this morning to get a picture while the red knockout roses and the yellow blooms were all open at the same time. I am amazed at how well the knockout roses are doing this year! They've been in the ground for 6 years! Never got more than ankle high. This year I really gave them some TLC by cutting down a Bradford Pear that was over them and digging out its roots; then fertilizing them with Bayer 3 in 1 fert/insect/fungic every six weeks. They obviously are loving it! They are now getting almost hip high and still growing big strong canes! The Golden Showers climbers were planted this spring and they are already over 6' tall! And if you look real close the Jackmanii Superba Clematis are growing great too! Some of the vines are actually growing out into the roses now.
