  • For those in warm climates, now is the time to sow winter crops. Greens, peas, spinach, carrots, and potatoes are just some of the veggies you can start. Check the seed packet for number of days until harvest. Make sure you have enough time for these cool-season crops to mature before the stifling heat returns. And don't laugh at the rest of us who are freezing through the winter; at least we don't wear green and red shorts to Christmas dinner!

  • If you have a large garden or many containers, look for discarded Christmas trees. Use the branches as mulch in the garden. Remember, your goal is to keep the bright winter sun from thawing your plants and pots.

  • Check local garden centers and newspapers for info on your regional flower shows. Most are held in midwinter. Flower shows help chase away the winter doldrums and provide inspiration.
