As a comment about Barberries (Berberis), Lioba wrote:

Barberry has been banned for sale in New York State. It is considered invasive. In my opinion, since I am writing among friends, that is bulldinky! Yes, when the plant is stressed it will send out seeds by the multitudes. What plant wouldn't? But under healthy conditions, it doesn't, as has been my experience. I think someone didn't like this plant.

Honestly, when I moved into my home and inherited a hedge of them, I wasn't sure what to think. I don't like the thorns, but I do love that they provide food for wildlife when none is to be had because the berries hang on. They give protection to animals. I respect the barberry bushes. I love the color variations.

Mine get abused because they are so close to the road. I do trim them back and clear underneath occasionally, getting the dead wood out. They tolerate a lot.

They surely do give the message KEEP OUT!

@Lioba, I totally understand your thinking. I've been confused by the term, "invasive," and so have done a bit of research on it to try to understand better. Evidently, plants that simply send out seeds and multiply a LOT are considered to be "aggressive." While "invasive" plants are not only aggressive, but also block out the growth of indigenous plants so that eventually, there are no more and only the invasive species remains. Some definitions also apply invasive to plants that aren't that aggressive.

I believe the term is applied in the same way to birds, frogs and other creatures. A very important definition.

@joannakat Yes I read that and why barberry should not be banned. This is information given to me from my local Agway by the way. She also told be Burning Bush was also banned from sale. They do the same thing. Should I do a similar post for Burning Bush?

Thank you for your support and definition research into this matter. But this fight I'm not taking up with .gov

I wanted folks in NYS to know they may eventually not see this plant in nurseries anymore and may have to get it another way. Oops did I say that?
Its easy for me to believe in miracles when science can't explain why a blade of grass has its shape and that is just one plant and one attribute.
