As a comment about Common Fig (Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey'), gardengus wrote:

I have been successful in growing this fig in a large pot (14'' clay) as a houseplant and siting it outside for the summer. This is my third year and it has produced figs all three years. This year over a dozen so far and still immature fruit on the tree.

For those growing figs in a pot inside, don't be alarmed when the tree drops all of its leaves. This is a normal cycle. It is not dying. I cut back on water when the leaves start to drop and increase water when the new shoots appear. Takes about 4-6 weeks.

I've had success with many indoor, outdoor plants in Michigan and want to try growing one of these this year. I know there will be an indoor / outdoor shuffle.

This Michigander has had incredible fig growing success using his garage to overwinter when they go dormant (Slides, photos): https://michigannutgrowers.fil...

Wondering if I should go for one of his top 5 cultivars... or the "Brown Turkey" as I may be able to get that at a reputable nursery in town.

Also wondering if it will grow too large in 4-5 years.

Thanks for your post, ~ Deb

I had a fig for several years and because it was in a rather small pot (one I could bring inside) It kept a reasonable size ,
I have seen figs in greenhouses in very large pots that were tree size 6-8 foot tall, but they either had a forklift or did not move the plant.

Thanks for the sight , looks like a lot of good info Thumbs up

Can't say what type to try my experience is limited. Shrug!
