2020 Fall Bulb Buy - ADR and Van Engelen

WE WILL NOT SHIP BULBS.
Delivery generally works out for pickup at the Fall Swap, depending on shipping dates. If the order is scheduled to ship after the swap, then we'll have a pickup party in Derwood, MD or possibly Frederick, MD!

It's that time of year when we start thinking about fall planting. Sure, we all but annuals throughout the summer, especially from those clearance racks, but we also start thinking about amaryllis for the holidays and spring color in our yards.

With this heat wave, it's so nice to think of planting in the fall, planning ahead for a great spring show, thinking about those wonderful Peruvian amaryllises for holiday gifts...

ADR (www.ADRBulbs.com) and Van Engelen ( https://www.VanEngelen.com) both have great bulbs at wholesale prices. However, we need to order entire boxes/bags of bulbs. This can be as few 10 for Amaryllis Christmas Gift to 250 for Muscari armeniacum. Purchasing as a group lets us split larger quantities and share in the savings.

We've been doing this for many years, so those who have participated before know the drill... If you haven't participated before, I'll ask for your money before placing the order. Otherwise you can pay at pickup. If there are any issues with payment, just keep communicating with me. Things happen, and as long as we keep talking we can generally work it out!

This is a group buy or "co-op," so we all SHARE THE RISK as well as the reward. If something unforseen happens and we don't get good bulbs, YOU WILL STILL OWE $. We save money as a group, and we could possibly lose money as a group. I'm not a retailer and can't afford to "absorb" a loss. This has never actually happened, but I need to be very clear on this up front.

WE WILL NOT SHIP BULBS.

Post below about what bulbs interest you. I will keep this thread up to date with pricing as people actually commit to quantities.

A note on pricing:
You won't be able to see the prices on the ADR site unless you have an account with ADR (I can see the prices, as can Jill), but we'll look up prices for you. Van Engelen shows pricing without an account. HOWEVER, when you are ready to order, please don't specify which company. As people place orders, I will bounce between both companies depending on who has the better price.

When you post an order, please make sure your post has ORDER as the first line of your post. This helps to sort through the chaff. If modifying, use 'ORDER UPDATE' as the first line. Any post without 'ORDER' or 'ORDER UPDATE' will be considered an inquiry only.

You will need to list in your post how many bulbs you are interested in per variety, how many you want and whether or not you're will to split a box/bag with someone else.
For example, if you want 75 of the Darwin 'Wedding Dress', you would put:

Darwin Wedding Dress, want 75, but could use 100

This item has minimum quantities of 50, 100 and 500. To fill your order, I would need to order at least 100 bulbs, which fills your max order of 100. But, if someone else wanted only 25, you would get your minimum of 75 and they would get their 25.

This may be a bit confusing, but please ask if you have questions.

One final note:
While ADR and Van Engelen have a 'huge' selection, they don't carry everything. If there is something that you want but don't see, let me know. I have a couple of other places that may have it.

So glad you're taking on ADR and wrapping my head around order this week. Is VE still in mix?

I figure Jill has enough on her plate for the forseeable.

Yes, VE is still an option. I just haven't put anything up yet.

Ok folks, time to get serious. I'd like to get things moving on an ADR and VanEngelen order. Things are beginning to sell out for this year.

Yes, I'll definitely need help.

On the orienpet mix, I assume it's this one from VE as I don't see any lilies on ADR this year.

I'm interested in VE's Orienpet mix #7140, 50 bulbs for $64.50. It's on pg 46 of the catalogue. The only other item I'm ordering from VE is Corydalis Purple Bird, which I didn't see on ADR's site. For some reason, I was able to see prices on the ADR site. Good value!

RIck, have you posted a "nudge" in other threads here? Or maybe send a note to people interested in fall swap? for the past few years, I've heard a lot of people talking in fall about joining us "next year," but we've only had a few participants. Not sure what's up with that.

Thank you very much for taking on the fall bulb buy this year! I'll be bouncing between here and Pittsburgh all summer.

I'll try to follow along and help find pricing info as needed, or give input on varieties -- especially daffodils, as I've tried a lot of them over the years!

AMARYLLIS AMARYLLIS AMARYLLIS

I just looked at the Peruvian amaryllis bulbs at ADR -- much larger selection this year!! However, I also see that they are selling in lots of 16 now, rather than 10. But the prices are still $5-6 per JUMBO bulb.

I'm really liking the new selections 'Revelation' (all lovely stripes) and 'Cape Horn' (like a rose-pink version of 'Minerva'). For gifts next year, I'm drawn to 'Red King' (double) and 'Mandela' (deep burgundy-red, a Victorian Christmas color), both of which I've grown before, so I can attest to their big blooms and sturdy stems.

I found the uncropped version of ADR's photo, which looks like natural light in morning or evening, so should show the "true" color (although with digital images we know how that goes).

I also found a photo on Hyde's site that looks like it was taken in bright overhead sun. Either type of pink, I think it's sweet!

No, I haven't. I was going to put up a last call note this weekend. Right now, I'm dealing with a bad headache / migraine for 5 days now. I even took today off and spent most of it in the dark.

You may have noticed that I haven't been keeping up with this. If you are interested in buying any bulbs from ADR of van Engelen, I need to know no later that Friday, 21-Aug-2020

Say, do I hear a bailiff? Rick if it's not too late, I would like to order ADR's Assorted Jumbo Amaryllis Mix, which is 18 bulbs for $133.48.

OK... Did anybody see that they are offering EXHIBITION size bulbs this year? Check out Darwin Tulip 'Big Love' -- according to VE, "dusky-pink with a lilac sheen, an interior white-encircled heart of gold accented by variable steel-blue flames and garnet-blushed stems." !!!

The "problem" is that the big bulbs are only offered in a crate of 400 for $120.. but if we split a crate, that means 100 huge (size 14) bulbs for $30, rather than 100 regular size (10/12) bulbs for $37.

I'd be good with half a crate (200), figuring on giving away a bunch of them... Can I interest anybody else?

I think they'd combine really well with Muscari 'Fantasy Creation' or M. 'Valerie Finnis'. I like the way 'Fantasy Creation' starts out looking like regular M. armeniacum in bud and then opens out to this double-flowered, fluffy pyramid of blooms. ADR has 'Fantasy Creation' box of 150 for $25.50
