As a comment about Daylilies (Hemerocallis), LiliesandCats wrote:

Hello...

I am looking for information about the truth regarding the toxicity of Hemerocallis Fulva or true day lilies. to cats There is confusion about this. On the poison control site , the SPCA and at vet offices, it is posted as highly toxic, yet the photos accompanying the 'day lily' is actually a Tiger Lily,

I have read in other forums on this page (including a survey which I completed... though it was set up back in 2012 and may no longer be useful) that the lily my cat ate is not toxic, not lethal and that that particular day lily is actually not viewed in recent times as part of the lily family.

Very confused about this. ... and having spent over $500+ Canadian to get my cat treated and thoroughly traumatized by an overnight sty and intravenous fluids, follow up blood work, I will miffed if the info circulating all these years is untrue and has not been updated.

Any experiences or thoughts on this, please let me know.

Cheers,

Kathryn

I don't have an answer, and I'm sorry about the trauma you & your kitty went through... I do want to suggest reposting this as its own thread in the Daylilies forum. There are plenty of cat lovers there, and somebody should have an answer. I only saw this comment because it was new, and I didn't want it to get lost among the thousands of entries to the DL database.

OK, I still don't have an answer from my own experience, but some googling produced a lot of lists and articles indicating that BOTH Lilium and Hemerocallis (daylilies) are seriously toxic to cats, causing severe kidney damage. Looks like daylilies aren't similarly toxic to dogs or bunnies. (or groundhogs, from my own observation)

Regardless, I'm glad you chose the "better safe than sorry" approach and got your cat treated.

Every where you search online, Daylilies are listed as toxic to cats.

I am just including this link to the American Hemerocallis Society:

https://www.daylilynetwork.org...

I have about 150 daylilies in my backyard. My cats have always gone outside supervised and none have ever gotten sick. I have seen them playing with the leaves, biting them and playing with used scapes.
I used to be in my Local Daylily Society and they have always told us it is a Myth.
