I planted poppy seeds early this Spring and this is what grew in my planter - I never got any flowers. I have procrastinated long enough Whistling and need to know what this is since it is going to be close to freezing tonight. Can someone help? Thank you so much as always. Terri. Thank You!

I'm pretty sure your plant is Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium)...

No, I have lots of carrots and its definitely not a carrot. But, it does have a thick taproot. I'm going to look up wormwood and see what I find. Thanks. Thank You!

Wow I've grown CA poppies before but didn't recognize the leaves...can't believe how much they resemble wormwood, but you're probably right! Thumbs up

The fat root will be bright orange. California poppies are perennial so leave the roots in the pot and put them someplace to winter over. In the ground, the roots would be fine.

Remember to water the roots once in a while.

Hurray! Thank you @ctcarol @daisy @janinilulu !! I have succeeded growing my first poppy!!! Are they biennials? Since I grew the foliage this year, maybe I'll have flowers next year? I did look up wormwood @jheirloomseeds and I was resigned to thinking and wondering "what the heck?" and then decided the birds had brought me another present. Hilarious!
Thank You!
BTW, the seeds were from @Dogsndaylilies seed swap. I'll have to ask Libby if there's a way I can find who traded them to me. I hope y'all are joining the swap...so many awesome seeds!!

California poppies grow on bare dirt with minimal care. That means toss the seed and watch them grow. The seeds will not germinate in areas with competition - they really do need bare dirt.

They are short lived perennials but do bloom the first year from seed. Maybe they didn't appreciate being grown in a pot (I have never seen them successfully grown in a pot) as they have very long taproots.

@IJsbrandtGA Do you know which swap they were from? I might be able to look them up! Smiling
