Dear garden lovers. I have some japanese irises which I planted in pots last year. I need some quick pointers regarding yellow tip and general care like do I cut foliage back? I live in a Mediterranean climate, so pretty hot 8/9 months a year. I have not gone through this forum yet. Thank you.

@Tsuboniwa - Such a gorgeous photo, unfortunately not a JI but probably Japanese roof iris/Iris Tectorum. Someone will come along to help you regarding care.

Please post the photos to our database. Thanks.

Martin, I think Marilyn has this, @Polymerous, maybe she can give some advise.

Now I'm wondering if it could be this.

I wouldn't cut back the foliage until it goes totally yellow to brown.

Welcome! to the iris forum, martin. i am afraid i don't grow the iris you have, but i do grow japanese irises. i think the kind that i grow are called 'hanshobu', but i am not sure? these are generally called japanese iris.

Thumb of 2018-10-07/shizen/e03936. i have a few, but they are fairly new to my garden and haven't bloomed yet, or were buried too deep in the foliage to get a proper photo shot.

i grow most of them in pots. that way i can control the water, along with mosquito dunks. Hilarious!

I was just gifted with my very first Japanese iris!! Hurray! I'm very excited but also panicking just a little. It was a surprise that I had often admired, but never expected to try in my very sandy garden.
All of my experience is with pots that drain. How do I grow this water loving beauty in a pot!?!
Help!

I'd opt for compost mixed with a soil-less mix - half and half. I've grown many that way for the first six months.

Which one did you get?

The kind lady that gave it to me doesn't know. She shared this photo of it.

Should I keep standing water in the pot during summer?

You can but it's not mandatory. Make sure the mix is wet as you plant it! Keep it very well watered but it doesn't have to be standing water. Mine were planted (seldom divided) more than 20 years ago and get no additional water - just the irrigation system four times a week.

Last question (maybe). What size container is recommended.

I'm not good with guessing at sizes.

They grew very well in this self-watering pot - maybe 3 qt.

Take a photo of the entire plant, from root ball to top, so I can judge it better.

You're quite welcome.

The second photo shows the root ball after I removed the plant from the pot. Check out those roots!

I only keep them potted to get them well rooted, then they get planted and watered well.

Walmart doesn't mention how many quarts the self watering pots hold. Sorry!
