Some one told me i can eliminate or at least minimize the number of ads that appear on the site by going to the "profile" page, but i do not find it. Particularly unwelcome are the ads that flash and move.

Beverly,

Go to your profile page
Select: Change your site preferences
Scroll down to where you see "Disable ads on the site" and select: Yes, remove the ads.
Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and select: Save Changes

Hope this works for you because I know that advertisements (especially the flashing ones) are very annoying!

It looks like you haven't quite hit the 100 mark on posting to the database. You're very close. You'll soon see that option if it's available outside the US. I don't know about that.

Yes, it looks like you are about 3 Plant Database contributions short of the needed 100 to have the option to remove ads. Add a few more comments or photos and you should have the option. Smiling

Oops, I keep forgetting about the fact that we have to contribute a certain number of things (is it 100?) to the database before we have options with our site preferences.

Beverly, it looks like you've contributed 97 items so far and hopefully after 3 more database contributions, you should be able to change your preferences.

okay thank you all, i was quite active on the database prior the merger so they must have starting counting at the beginning of the merger or some other later date. it is not important and really it is a good idea to give people incentive to contribute, at least for the people in the US. Most of my ads are coming from Mexico so it will probably be a forever situation. What is worse the ads from Mexico are jumping around and smacking you in the face and that doesn't give me much incentive. Rolling my eyes.

No, it's based on anything that you've ever contributed to the database.
It makes no difference that you are in Mexico. You are just 3 contributions shy of being able to disable the ads.

Yes, I barely even remember seeing ads (also here in Mexico) since I crossed that magic number of contributions.

Beverly, do you mean when All Things Plants merged with garden.org? Everything should have transferred over from ATP. The following is what shows that you've contributed:

72 images
3 Landscape photos
7 comments
1 plant
10 data proposals
4 miscellaneous proposals

There was no transferring anything from ATP. There was a name change and then what was transferred into this site was all the items from the old NGA site.
And as mentioned, your contributions did not start over with that merger.

Go to your profile, select the 5th banner down Data Base contributions, than change your add info in Site Preferences.

Thanks RJ, but I don't have that option. That's why I wsa asking about the number of contributions that I've made.

Oddly, I don't see the ads on the desktop version, only on the mobile version.

For me, that information is on the profile which is set off in sections. On my computer those headings are in a green bar and is called Plant Database Contributions: and then those contributions are listed in the section below. I use a desktop and have never looked at my profile page on a mobile device, so I guess that could be different somehow. I'd still think the information was there, though. After all, it's associated with your profile Smiling .

Found it! Thanks. I need to make more contributions as I'm only at 45 of the required 100 to be able to turn off the ads.

Thanks all

Gee, i forgot all about this thread. Apparently i have 109 contributions to the database. If i am still seeing ads, they are not invasive and don't bother me at all. Dave was working at the time to control the invasive ads. I never requested to have no ads. So i don't know where my peace with the ads actually came from but i have no complaints. It is a source of income for the website which is a good thing.

I checked my profile and i have selected "show me the ads". I did not see any ads on my home page, i found a couple on a database page but i had to hunt for them. I am sure they are elsewhere but they are not bothersome. Why not select "show me the ads" and give a little boost of revenue and gratitude to this site which gives us so much and asks for nothing.
