In very recent years, it has been decided by botanists that there is a David Elm (Ulmus davidii) that is native to both China and Japan. The Japanese variety is definitely U. davidii japonica and the Chinese variety might still be U. davidii wilsonii or another last name. I knew Dr George Ware some from Morton Arboretum that is in Lisle, Illinois, not Ohio. He took cuttings from this Asian elm, of what was considered a hybrid between the Japanese x Wilson Elms, at the Thornhill Building on the west side of the Arboretum and introduced the new cultivar of 'Morton' and then given the trade name of 'Accolade' I believe in the late 1990's. I posted two photos: the first is the smaller Accolade Elm in front of Thornhill and the other is the larger Accolade Elm in back of the Thornhill Building. I think it was the larger tree in back that was planted in 1924 where he took the cuttings in the 1990's, if the other tree was there at the time.
