I found this plant growing amongst rocks by the ocean in Sausalito, California. I'm pretty sure that they become submerged during high tide.

That does look similar but the leaves are different. Could it be that it's just a very variable species?

IDK. Were you thinking of this kind of thing, Ham?
Ice Plant (Delosperma cooperi)

I did too, but no idea about its' salt tolerance / likelihood of showing up @ shoreline.

I recently got some cuttings of this one. I know it grows a lot in the so Calif area and I think it grows near beaches.

That's the one! That's why I wasn't sure about putting that out there, as I can't imagine an Ice Plant could take being submerged by salt water. But, I guess stranger things have happened!

The flowers are not a match for Delosperma or Carpobrotus. The latter also makes much fatter leaves. I do not know what to call the mystery succulent, though.

Not to be confusing, but apparently Carpobrotus edulis is AKA 'Ice Plant.' Sighing! But man, it sure does look like Delosperma cooperi (edit, Carpobrotus edulis that is) to me! They're obviously in different genus(es?), but the same Family (which doesn't say much as I think a lot of succulents are in the same Family. But, from reading, it looks like they both grow in S. Africa!

"Ice plant" is a name for that entire family of plants (Aizoaceae) which includes Carpobrotus, Delosperma, and many others. Including beach dwellers like Mesembryanthemum (also not a match) which grow along the California coast as well. That genus features two invasive annual succulents.

The flowers in the original post look like they have 5 petals, which would place the mystery plant out of that family.

I'm all ears! Interesting! I don't know much about those types of plants (I'm a terrible, terrible succulent grower).

It's not Carpobrotus edulis but I did 'steal' a cutting of C. edulis from an abandoned lot in South San Francisco. Whistling If I can get it to root for me I am planning to test it's cold hardiness (sources vary from zones 7b to 9a) here in Utah where it is an impossibility that it will become invasive.

I planted it in various places in my 7b yard. I also put some in a pot to keep inside in winter, just in case.

I was only able to get a small piece because I was on foot and also because I didn't want to get the cops called on me or anything since I haven't had the best encounters with them before. Crying Glare

I think the cops see me and because I'm young, have long hair, and don't necessarily look like the "typical" American they automatically assume I'm doing something I shouldn't be doing or that I'm a gangbanger. Shrug!
And if they ask for an explanation and I tell them it's about a plant, you can imagine what they'll be thinking.๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜…

You rebel you! Smiling It doesn't seem like a terrible thing to me to take a piece of that plant home.

Speaking of young and not a "typical" American, here's a recent article about native California coastal succulents that have been disappearing to the Asian market.

https://www.theguardian.com/en...

Obviously a different story from the plant that started this thread, to be perfectly clear, but an interesting tangent in context.

And it's funny to me that someone would actually want to grow Carpobrotus. I understand why you would try, don't get me wrong. Especially where winter cold prohibits the plant from escaping your garden. But from my point of view, in our climate, the plant is more a menace or a weed than anything else. I have planted it in the garden but then I regretted it and pulled out most of it. I would some day like to remove it entirely but our dry winter did not do much to promote the growth of the ice plant I was hoping would replace it.

The reason is evident on our local beaches where these plants outcompete our native plants and take over, because they can survive on pure sand through our months-long annual summer drought.

We have the same poaching problem with many of our highly endangered endemic Pediocactus here in Utah, although I think most of the poachers here are Americans and Europeans.

Which Pediocactus is endangered? When we were in Idaho last summer, we walked on them all day before noticing they were there and then realized there were literally thousands under foot.
