I live on the west coast and after years of just wing'n it I'm second guessing my design. My boxwood border is the issue right now as I'm not sure it looks good or fits with the shape & theme of the garden. The boxwoods were poorly planted & spaced so now I'm either going to re-do the planting arrangement or ditch the concept entirely. What do you think? The reasoning behind the meandering hedge was to provide structure and interest all season but not sure now. My feelings won't be hurt so please be honest. Thank-you!

I'm no landscape pro, but I absolutely love what you've created! I think the boxwood fits in well and wouldn't change a thing.

I'm a fan of structure in the garden to contain whatever movement and variety is happening in and around it. would you consider moving the boxwood to the top of the wall and edges of the garden to act as a border to the entire garden area? They would define and contain the garden without being too formal due to the curving shapes of the walls, and the informal plantings behind and above would further loosen the design while keeping some structure. I think it would add a more cohesive look. IMO.

Thank-you for the input. Great timing Jmh as I couldn't agree more and started the re-maneuvering it just several hours ago. What a coincidence! Here it is in progress... I'm going to go for a different look but going to sleep on it tonight. I might re-use the hedge or not, I will keep you posted.

Okay after several hours of trying to come up with some masterpiece and wrestling around plants and shovels all morning I decided less is more and just used a few as foundation plants for interest. I will post a pic later when it's cooler, however a not very exciting design.

This is really quite boring but structurally works for my brain.. I planted three very young boxwoods of various sizing (purposely) in a pattern in four locations. I picked young ones so I could shape them to my liking. I used a tape measure for precision and moved some Japanese forest grass to the center-left for more symmetry. I still need to plant stuff in front of the Japanese Forest grass... any suggestions?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I thought it was very attractive as first planted (very subjective-I know) it looked so natural, now it decidedly looks "planned" with all those Petunias lined up? Just a thought!

Thanks so much Frank for the input. I still might re-do the squiggle of boxwoods but I'm going away for a couple weeks and going to think about it. I do like being able to see the forest grass as the height of the rock wall plus the boxwoods blocked it from the "road" view. I actually didn't move the petunias as I always plant annuals along the entire retaining rock wall (which only shows 1/3 portion in the picture).

I've had time to think and decided to forgo the redo of the boxwood hedge and change things up. I recently added 6 dwarf hardy fuchsia and 3 dwarf purple jazz hand Loropetalum. Also 4 thick-stemmed wood ferns. I still have more to add but that is a start.

Starting to come together... needs some maturing and a few more things.
