No not put to bed to sleep just a figure of speech.
They will go down into the lowest box on frames with honey and cluster really thick for warmth. they eat the honey they stored and you did not rob from them. Shiver their wings to distrubte the heatand those in the center of the cluster work to the out side edges and those on the out side work to the center of the cluster.

I have never placed a temp probe in the center of a cluster but have read that the center will be 94F all winter long no mater if it is 30f out side or 30 below zero out side. the queen will remain in that cluster center all winter.

They continue up the frames of honey hopefully not reaching the top till mid spring.

I may place a candy board on the hives a bit later in the season on a wind less sunny day when the bees will fly out of the hive and go potty. Yes they need to go potty every so often. Bee keepers are fimular with the brown spots in the snow and used to seeing dead bees that didn't make it back to the hive in time or dead bodys the barial detail carried out.

It is just now getting cold enough to keep the bees inside most of the time here.
We had our first heavy frost a few mornings ago
Now it is time to check for new plants to add to the garden for them to forage from.
