It has two large stalks, pointed, smooth leaves that are opposite each other. Here are photos I took:

Thank You! for any suggestions. It doesn't look like anything else on my property (so what's new? Rolling my eyes. )

The leaves appear to be alternate to me, and it looks very familiar, but I can't name it.

Looks like a Prunus sp. - probably Prunus serotina (Black Cherry).

Yes, Porkpal,
You're right, the leaves are alternate. My mistake. I'm wondering if it's a black cherry that was "gifted" to my property by a bird. Thank You!

Thank You! John,
I was coming to that conclusion as you were writing Hilarious! My only concern is that if it is a Black Cherry then the leaves could be poisonous (when crushed they convert to hydrogen cyanide)? Plus, I think it gets really tall and I don't want that where it has landed (I'm thinking out loud Whistling ).

They also reproduce enthusiastically - with the help of the birds.

My first thought was also Wild Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) We had a few growing on the property at our old house.

Thank You! @ViburnumValley, @porkpal, and @plantladylin. I appreciate your help so much. Hurray!

Now I know what I need to do since it is smack in the front yard where I had two sugar maples removed (too close to the driveway) and I want that area for a saucer magnolia. Smiling
