Hi,
Next to my front porch, I lost a large evergreen shrub because the area is too wet (it has to do with the structure of the house and the roof pitch). Since I can't change the house or roof pitch, I'm looking for what I can plant in a space that about 6-7 feet wide by about 3-4 feet deep (see photo). I was thinking of some Ghost ferns? and something else to go with it unless that would look stupid next to the porch. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Gayle
This is the side of the porch where the downspout is with an extension but the water pours off of the roof.


This is the alcove area where all of that greenery has been ruined by too much water from rainstorms. So it stays wet and shady.

I realize your question is what to plant in that wet area, but if you own the house you could have the gutters repaired/redone to increase capacity by increasing the size of the gutters used so they will not be overwhelmed during a huge rain event. The size of the downspout can also be increased to allow more water to flow away quickly. You can also increase the number of downspouts.

Thanks Greene, I was thinking the same thing after reading about gutters online. The number of downspouts and increasing the size of the actual downspout. I've also seen gutter splash guards (they're 4'' high and 24 inches long to redirect the water).

for reinforcing those ideas and I'm going to discuss that with the gutter company that's coming out to work on it. After all, I don't want the water to affect the foundation of the house or get into the crawl space.
