I think it might be a rat or some other type of rodent but something has been eating the trunk and limbs of my Brugmansia. I planted this tree over 10 years ago and it has been very healthy. What I'm seeing now is something stripping the bark. There are tooth marks, all over the limbs and trunks. No signs of insect pests whatsoever. What to do to save it?

Find some "IV Organic Plant Guard", which comes as a spray or a paint to apply to the trunk and branches. Works.

That would be very unlikely...
Maybe you aren't seeing insects... But I would suspect caterpillars.

Thing about brugmansia is that it's a drug. A mammal just isn't likely to want to consume this plant.

I run a chainsaw to cut these plants down in the autumn, and when I forget my eye protection, my pupils get huge... like they describe with datura... Makes it hard to be outside or drive...

Not a good thing for a rat.

@Stone: you seem to have the idea that San Francisco rats don't like getting high.
They eat all sorts of spicy foods, toxic plants, and drug paraphernalia.
What a life.

doesn't matter... both have same druggie effect.

The juice and sawdust from either getting in your eyes will cause them to dilate.

I consumed datura for the hallucinations as a kid... haven't needed to pursue that with the brugmansia...

Not a good time. And I can't imagine a wild mammal chasing that effect.
