If you are planting in IL, it's too cold to leave in ground, you will need to lift, or dig up, your cannas after the first frost. If the soil is too dense, they won't thrive as well, mine get stunted in poor dense clay soil.
A pot would be easier, just bring inside for winters.
I've never fertilized mine.

When I grew canna in the white clay we have down here (kaolin), they thrived... I dd have to turn a butt-load of horse poop into the clay first...
At my present house in the sand... I can barely keep any canna alive...
So... wet clay? great... dry sand? not so much.

as above... They're tropical... prolly need to store in the basement like taters and carrots when grown north of hardiness zone.

Sun? Full sun to part shade... they tolerate an amazing amount of shade here...

Down here, they bloom until hard frost... and even after they've been frozen to the ground, continue sending up growth all winter...

Up here (zone 7 b or 8?) most will rot after freezing in ground. To keep for next year reliably, I dig and throw in a box in the basement.
They love water. Keep well watered.
Plant it and they will come.
