I have one clump of deformed irises among all the normal ones. They are tiny, maybe 1 inch in size, with nothing much of a standard or fall. The very first bloom of this clump had nothing but a beard and style arms(?), so it was only reproductive growth with no falls or standards.

My very first Just Crazy has four falls, two standards, and four style arms (I'm unsure of the names of the different parts so maybe they aren't style arms?).

Are these irises doomed or can they recover and revert to normal next year? What causes this to happen? Any advice is welcome.

The first one may have been damaged by pesticides? Do you happen to use them or something similar?

Just Crazy shouldn't have anything wrong with it. Sometimes irises go with four falls, or four standards, or say even two.

Thanks for the swift reply. The NOIDs are all in one garden bed that I did spray to get rid of some grass that had crept in, so it probably is a poison problem. I will be re-doing that bed soon and making it more difficult for the grass to invade so I hopefully won't have that problem again.

I'm glad my Just Crazy, and any others that decide to do something outside the norm, isn't doomed. I was so looking forward to seeing it for the first time that I freaked out a bit when I discovered it was not perfect.

That is definitely a perfect example of Roundup drift. The leaves should also show some deformation. The good news is that the irises grow out of it and should be normal from this point on.

Lola, I think your 'Just Crazy' will be fine. I've had a few weird blooms on 'Volcanic Glow' this year too (one with only two falls and two standards, another missing a standard and the worst had two falls and one standard!). These types of anomalies seem to be environmental and typically don't repeat.

Lola ~ I think it is a genetic defect in Just Crazy. Maybe that's why it is named Just Crazy.

My Just Crazy almost always had a weird bloom, usually just the first bloom to open, and later ones are normal.

.

With your iris "Just crazy" is fine. He has 40 percent of the flowers of a non-standard structure. (But this does not spoil it, it has its own charm). (Pesticides are not used in their practice.)
