This plant/sapling is growing in my Mom's front yard. Any ideas?

I've had to use tree and shrub killer on this here at home before just to knock it back from my gardens and back closer to the fields. If soil is loose it will come up easily to a point before breaking off.

Hey! That's my namesake weed you're talkin' about!

Yes, it can be a thug, but I love seeing photos of old houses in the UK/ Europe where Virginia Creeper is trained to grow up walls and fences like ivy. Spectacular when the color changes to a bright red in the autumn.

It might be less weedy in cooler climes, as in Ontario?

here .... Virginia creeper will climb to the top of pine trees - or - anything else climbable ... maybe less so in Ontario

No fall color here just a house-eating vine. I'm sure it is less aggressive in shorter growing seasons.

Yes, it's pretty weedy here also. But in its defense, it's almost the only plant that ever has fall color. Most trees just stay green here, or turn a boring brown color.

I was amazed to discover that VC is a prized ornamental vine overseas, but so it is. If you ever watch 'Agatha Christie's Marple', there is an episode ("The Secret of Chimneys") where a Virginia Creeper on an old house was key to solving a mystery... Blinking
