Looks like variegated knotweed.
Don't know about the variegated type but the Japanese knotweed is Highly Invasive and on the banned list in many states.
..a balanced life is worth pursuit.

It's a shame it's so invasive!

I agree. It's a very handsome plant that will be sprayed with vegetation killer as soon as it stops raining.
