This daylily was trying to spread its feet in a pot that was too small and this was the result! How sad !
How beautiful it is though I repotted it in this pot and maybe it will bloom in this form.

I had one do the curly thing a couple of years ago, it had been planted in the ground and flowered normally in previous years, and flowered normally the following year. So I just put it down to an anomaly, it certainly didn't have a restricted root area in my case.

I had a first-ever scape on an in-ground [not root restricted] seedling do that last year although it did bloom [2" off the ground]. Crossing Fingers! for better this year.

I had one similar seedling this year. It had a loop in the scape.
It tried to fix itself and sashimied itself. So I set it up on a scaffold (which had to keep being adjusted as it grew) and it is surprisingly blooming fine, although cannot be moved until that is done.

I have grown many different daylilies in small pots. Some were in very small pots (4" diameters, different heights). Although not all flowered, many did but none had scapes that looked like that.
I have seen one or two daylilies growing in the field have similar scapes in more than 30 years of growing daylilies.

@DaisysDaughter,

Could you please keep sharing pictures of that scape every couple days? It's very curious, I'm interested to see its further development. Is the scape's base around the area where the bract is attached, and below, darker colored or is that a shadow?

Thanks,
Pat

The curled scape did not change from May 2 to May 9th? I don't see any obvious change.

It's about to bloom!
I'm so excited!!!
I love day lilies and my heart hurts because my darling" Daylily "Neptune's Daughter"croaked when we got the freeze year before last.

I keep forgetting about this thread then clicking on it again, thinking it is about guerilla-gardening using daylilies ("restricted areas"). D'Oh!

My old brain cannot hold too many thoughts in there at the same time, I guess.

Anyhow, I did find another curvy scape in a pot. But the cause there I determined as a scape failing to emerge from the leaves properly, leaving the top of the scape where the buds are, stuck to the base of the leaves it was supposed to emerge from. I helped it out by pulling on it and tearing the leaf somewhat. I imagine the scape will now straighten itself out to bloom as nature intended.

You cannot really see the third proliferation because one of them is behind where it curls.

Daisy's Daughter, my Neptune's Daughter made it through a New England winter…I think you could try again. I got mine from CT Daylilies…it did lose a fan but still came through with two out of three.
