Is this growing wild? If so I would guess that it is Malva moschata. BONAP doesn't show any record of M. alcea growing wild in Virginia. They both look so much alike, I don't think you can tell the difference from the bloom. You'll have to look a lot closer to the details.

Hello Nick, I got curious when I saw your image and thought it looked like the Malva alcea 'Fastigata' that I had been meaning to put into the Database. I found quite a difference in foliage between this variety and the Malva moschata. I'll put in two photos of each.

And now for the Malva Moschata.


I hope this may be of some help. But when truly in doubt, it is best to get a plant from a nursery , to compare.
