Thread OP

Hi, newbie here.
Maybe a long shot but we had an 'olde romeo' Rose years ago but unfortunately lost it. We have been looking for another since. The rose centre it came from no longer does them. And we can't find them on the net. I don't suppose anyone here sells them (cuttings/plant) or know where we could find it?
Many thanks Angela

I think this is the rose you are trying to acquire even though the spelling is slightly different. You could call them to double check. And you could put your name on their waiting list. I have done that in the past and was successful at securing one of their roses.

Angsi, I absolutely love Olde Romeo. I had it for >15 years, but it died a couple of years ago. It was one of my most cherished out-of-commerce roses, and I really regret not making cuttings of it when I had the chance.
Margie, with all respect to Rogue Valley Roses, they have a LOT of out--of-commerce roses listed on their website that they clearly have no intent of propagating. I have been on the waiting list for several of them for more than 5 years. I think they keep them listed on HMF to generate traffic to their website. Not holding my breath.

I have received Brass Band, Caroline Victoria, Champagne Cocktail and Stretch Johnson from them after being on waiting lists for a few months. All the roses were small. I potted them up over the summer to build up their root system and planted them in the ground in the latter part of August.
I could not find another source for this particular rose other than Rogue Valley. It has been my experience that "If you don't ask, it's a definite 'No' ".

Margie, that's great that you got those roses from Rogue Valley after being on the waiting list for only a few months. All I was saying is that I have been on their waiting list for several roses for a number of years. My gut feeling is that Olde Romeo falls in that category, particularly since it's been out-of-commerce for so long. But I've read that they have new management, so maybe they'll get their act together on the rare ones they keep listed in their catalog.

I'm sorry you lost your rose.

I agree with both of the posters above about Rogue Valley Roses (RVR). I've been on their waiting list for a few roses for a handful of years without success, and haven't had a waiting list success with them. But I've otherwise had a good experience with them, so I readily believe MargieNY's good waiting list experience. Like SusaninSB, I believe that some of the roses they list are never going to be sold by them again. I like to think of those roses as archived for reference, but everybody has to make money.

I buy frequently from RVR because they have a great selection and possibly the best search tool in the business. I see that Old Romeo is a red hybrid tea with good fragrance and good rebloom. Here are some red hybrid teas (and hybrid perpetuals, which tend to have a similar overall shape of the plant) with good fragrance and rebloom that are in stock: https://tinyurl.com/89uw8ncn

Unfortunately, RVR compared to, say, Antique Rose Emporium or Angel Gardens, sells tiny plants at a similar price. So if RVR and ARE are both selling a rose, I'll often buy it from ARE.

Juniper, you are being extremely generous in assuming that RVR is archiving these roses "for reference". If that's true, they should indicate so, and that they are not available. They keep them in their catalog for a reason. I ordered from RVR successfully back in the day, but this practice really turns me off to their company.

Oh, yeah, @SusanInSB. I like to think of them generously, since I love their search tool so much, but we all know that capitalism is an inherently corrupting system. People (in every system) tend to find justifications for doing what is in their best interest to do.

Angel Gardens does a similar thing (or did; haven't checked on them recently), where they get themselves listed on HelpMeFind as vendors of a rose, and then never, ever take themselves off the list.

And Antique Rose Emporium also has a handful of roses that have been "out of stock" for half a decade.

It's not admirable. The kindest ACTUAL interpretation is that they're overwhelmed (in terms of time available, technological savvy, or both), which is probably part of it. RVR, and several other independent rose sellers, carry roses that have had no photo or a really lousy photo (e.g., the only picture is of a rose far past its prime) for years. That's certainly NOT in their economic best interest.

But some of their delay in purging their catalog is surely motivated by self-interest, which is frustrating, disappointing, and not commendable.
