Thread OP
Belmont, NC
I would like to raise blueberry bushes in containers on an enclosed back porch, I reside in Zone 7b.
I have placed an order for Top Hat blueberry bush, due to its compact size and may not need as much pruning as Sunshine Blue blueberry bush.
Everywhere I read I come across 'for a bountiful fruit yield, plant more than one'.
If I added Sunshine Blue Blueberry bush, will these two be compatible in improving fruit yield.
As I understand Top Hat is a low bush self pollinating variety and Sunshine Blue is Southern high bush variety and also self pollinating. Will these two blueberry bushes do good in each others company OR yield will be better if I went with two of the same kind.
Thank you in advance!

I am not keen on growing blueberries in containers.
They prefer rich, well draining soils and some significant sunshine. They also need acidic soil, in the range of 5.5-5.8.
I just feel that if you are looking for a significant yield, that requires an outdoor bed. If you want to grow a few blueberries for the novelty, then try containers, large containers.

How did it go? I'm planning to do the same thing this year. No matter what I do I am unsuccessful at growing blueberries in the ground.
Fortunately I live near a nursery supply that has an excellent soil mix for Ericaceous plants.
I welcome any experiences or tips from those who've tried the same.

Quercusnut, blueberries are not hard. The big whoppers do not like intense sun along with the heat. They may need to be shaded at some point.

Otherwise:
Acid soil of 5.2 to 5.6 or so in ph. There are various ways to decrease the ph of neutral or alkaline soils.
They enjoy sunshine. Mine get sun from 10 in the morning to 6 or 7 in the evening.
They like a deep, rich, fast draining soil. They do not like soggy conditions.
Fertilize two or three times a year.

YOU MUST PLANT MORE THEN 1, just like Lay's potato chips!!! Apparently they need to be cross pollinated and it should come from compatible varieties. When you do that, the increase in yield is tremendous!!

If you need further clarification, let me know.
