Here in Central Virginia, we have squirrels, voles, deer, and rabbits--all of whom love to eat tulips. However, while I do have the pleasure of watching a lot of wildlife in and around my yard, I also have tulips everywhere. First of all, planting tulips bulbs DEEP (10 to 12 inches) makes all the difference when it comes to critters. Squirrels will not dig that far down and voles tend to tunnel in the top six inches where it's easy to dig. So we've already cut the critter problem in half. Now. once I tuck in the tulips at 12", I cover them over to the six inch mark and tuck daffodils right there. Then I can go extra and tuck muscari right on top of the whole thing at 4". I watch the deer walk by my "bouquet" in the spring, sniff the daffs and leave the tulips alone. Give it a try. You don't have to do without tulips just because you have deer.
