This Pelargonium lives outside 24/7 in a container. A few days ago after bringing it home, it was spectacularly beautiful and healthy. Perfect blooms, perfect leaves. Now the blooms are not healthy and the leaves are sheriveled, floppy, and turning yellow. The drainage could not be better. Too much water, too little water? I don't know. I am hoping to save it so any ideas would be appreciated.

Looks pretty dry to me. Is the soil damp when you poke a finger in it?

Hi @pepper23 no, the soil seems to dry out very fast and i think there is not sufficient organic material in the soil to hold any water at all. It is also very windy for 3 or 4 hours a day and the plant is in maybe 8 hours of sun a day. When i transplanted i added chopped banana peels to the mix and also added leaf mold to hold more water. It didn't occur to me that there might be such a thing as too much drainage. I watered the plant last evening and this morning the flowers and leaves were much worse. It seems if i water...and if i don't water the plant is equally worse. Maybe it needs fertilizer in addition to what i added to the soil. Maybe i should try giving it some shade. There are new leaves that look very healthy but i don't know if they will remain that way. I have followed all the instructions for it's care. Could it be in shock post transplant? Nothing seems to be eating it.

NO! Don't fertilize it any more. It's already stressed out and fertilizer may cause more stress and can burn the roots. Did you use potting soil or garden soil in the pot? It should be a good quality potting soil. Garden soil is too heavy and dense and does not drain well in containers. I would put it somewhere where it gets only morning sun or dappled sun for a while. And protect it from the wind if possible. Don't water it until you can stick your finger down to the first knuckle in the soil before you feel dampness. Unfortunately yellowing leaves can be a symptom of both over and under watering. So you need to watch the water very carefully.

@seilMI i used potting soil not garden soil and the water ran right through it. I think the roots don't even have a chance to dampen. I have added more organics so the plant can at least capture some water for a few days. Thank you for your thoughts re fertilizing. I have moved the plant to a more hospitable environment on the terrace and will trim it of the spent flowers and leaves.

The soil looks too dense. I treat my Pelargoniums somewhat like my succulents. So I make sure the media is well draining and gritty. But they get a bit more water than my typical succulents, especially when we get into the long zero rainfall months.

Looking at the leaves of your plant, it seems it is the older leaves dying away. So that is also a natural cycle that it does. I also see lots of new leaves, so overall your plant is still doing okay. I would just try to improve that media. Mix in some pumice or perlite to make it lighter.

I agree, do not apply fertilizers. It is in some stress, and basically I find, they do not really need a lot. I hardly fertilize my Pelargoniums here.

I grow my Pelargoniums in part sun/shade. Sun in the morning, and thebdappled light in the afternoon. They will burn here if it gets way too much sun and suffer our dry heat. Your area may be better humdity wise so you have much better growing conditions.

It looks like things have turned around rather quickly and thank you all for your input. Looks like the plant will be just fine. Smiling
