Hi! I am trying to add an orchid to the data base but the genus is not recognized. Here are the details of my entry. Thank you!

I think Burrageara is now Oncidiopsis but I see no listing for it in that category either.

I'm sure @Australis/Joshua will be able to add it to our database.

Thanks Lin. You are right - it is now an Oncidopsis.

Susan - the reason it rejected your proposal is that there needs to be an existing entry for the genus in the database already. There aren't any Burrageara hybrids in the database, so the system would have told you post here (which you've done ) and ask for it to be added.

To complicate matters, Orchid species have undergone considerable reclassification over the past decade or so and some hybrid genera (such as Burrageara) are no longer the currently accepted name. I always check the RHS Orchid Register to confirm the current genus name for hybrids.

Also, for future reference, only the genus goes in the botanical name field when adding Orchid hybrids. Depending on whether it's just the grex or a named clone determines how the cultivar, trade name and series are used (non-standard Orchid naming conflicting with the database structure again). The easiest option is to put the name in the cultivar field and then I will tweak it as necessary when approving the proposal.

I'm so grateful for all you've done to help me @Australis! I will be bookmarking the search page. However, when I tried it, I entered Genus: Oncidopsis and Grex: Francine under the seed parent section but the site didn't return the same page as in your first link above.

Also, did you need to know that Burrageara was Oncidopsis to be able to use the search page? If so, I don't think I'll have much success with the website. All I know is what's on the tag. If I'm searching for more information about the plant I just google what the tag shows.

I have so much to learn

The search page allows you to search either by parents (seed and pollen parents), or for a specific grex.

If you scroll down to "Grex name search", you can put in the genus and grex there. You put the genus and grex into the seed parent search fields, so it was looking for any registered hybrids that have Francine as the pod (seed) parent.

The system does allow you to search by grex only (i.e. Francine) in case the genus has been changed. Obviously this can produce multiple results (since as long as the genus is different, the grex name can be reused). In those cases it's useful to have an idea of what it may have been changed to (sometimes it takes me a while to work it out, so don't worry if you get stuck).
