New Feeder Foils Squirrels

by Charlie Nardozzi

Yankee Flipper squirrel-proof bird feeder

It's time to think about getting your bird feeders stocked for fall and winter. Unfortunately, squirrels and larger birds, such as blue jays, love your bird feeder as much as the chickadees and finches. There have been some squirrel-proof feeders on the market, but now Droll Yankee has come out with the Cadillac version of squirrel-proof feeders.

The 'Yankee Flipper' is a 21-inch-long tube feeder that holds 4 quarts of bird seed. The feeding perch at the bottom of the tube feeder is calibrated to react to weight. Smaller birds, such as sparrows, can sit and feed in peace. However, if larger birds or ubiquitous squirrels jump on the perch, the motor in the bottom of the feeder is activated and the perch quickly spins, throwing the animal off the perch. It's quite exciting to watch squirrel after squirrel being thrown off, just like a World Wrestling Federation match.

The feeder comes with a rechargeable nicad battery and recharger. It sells for about $100.00. For more information contact Droll Yankee at www.drollyankees.com/products.cfm.
