| I have St Augustine grass in my front yard. There are several bare areas. I only see St Augustine plugs at home depot (no seeds). What is the proper way to plant the plugs and how far apart. Also, in view of the water restrictions, how long/often should I water St Augustine grass during the hot months? Thank you. |
| If you have healthy St. Augustine in your landscape you can take plugs from your own turf and plant them in the bare spots. I have used a "bulb planter" to take plugs from my lawn. It's a cylinder made of metal with a handle on top. It's about 3" in diameter and you just set it on the lawn and push it down the entire depth of the cylinder, twist it around and then pull up the plug of turf along with the roots. Or you can just use a shovel and dig down about 4" in a long strip and then dig down a similar depth in a line about 2" on the other side of the first line you dug. You should be able to pull this strip out of your lawn, cut it into 3-4" lengths and set these little strips into the bare spots. Set them 2-3" apart for fast fill in, or 4-6" apart for slow fill in. St. Augustine should be watered deeply once or twice a week, depending upon your watering restrictions. Deeply soaking the lawn will encourage deep root growth and help your turf tolerate droughts between waterings. Best wishes with your lawn. |
