| I spread cedar mulch in the spring. Now I am getting a light brown, spongy-looking substance which I am assuming is a fungus. What is causing this and how do I get rid of it? |
| There are different types of fungus that naturally grow on mulch. They are harmless to plants and are a natural part of the decay process, helping the mulch break down so it can feed the soil slowly over time. Usually the surface fungus disappears when dry weather hits and the mulch surface dries out, and/or when the particular material it is feeding on in the mulch is used up. Otherwise, you can scrape it off and dispose of it in the trash if it is unbearably ugly to you. Luckily, it is nothing to worry about, just a little unsightly. |
