| Last fall I noticed that two large Maple trees that are planted in a 3.5' strip between my street and sidewalk were beginning to crack and lift the sidewalk. Also, they were beginning to invade the main sewer line to the house. So, last week I reluctantly had them removed. I want to replace them, but am having a difficult time finding trees that will not have such invasive and uplifiting roots, yet are disease and insect resistant and not susceptible to wind and or snow and ice damage. Flowers in the spring and color in the fall would be nice. I am in zone 7 and the trees will be in full sun. Size is not an issue. Also, I have an irrigation system so water is not a problem. What do you recommend? |
| Here's a list of medium size (30'-40') deciduous trees suitable for sidewalk planting: Aesculus glabra (Ohio buckeye) Betula platyphylla 'Whitespire' (Birch) Catalpa ovata (produces white flower clusters) Cladrastis lutea (Yellowwood, produces white flowers) Prunus sargentii (Sargent's Cherry, pink flowers in spring) Amelanchier grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance', 'Princess Diana' (both with spectacular fall color) and 'Robin Hill' with pinkish flowers and good fall color.
