Each flower dies after a few days, and a lot of the time they don't fall off on their own, so to keep them looking good you have to pull the dead ones out. They just lift right out really easy, but if you're not careful, so do the good ones.
The lady that gave these to my mom said you have to dig them up in October and store them for the winter. When we planted them we broke the roots in half, some of the bigger ones into 3 pieces, and made sure the plant part (a red spike) was pointing up.
