Eastern White Pine is a major forest tree of the Northwoods and in the Appalachian Mountains from Newfoundland & Nova Scotia down to northern Georgia and around the Great Lakes. It is also planted a lot in landscapes in southeast Canada and below that in the northern US, offered by many nurseries. It is a "soft pine' in that its needles are soft and 5 in each bundle on the twigs and its long cones are cylindrical without prickles on the cone scales. The thin, soft needles are 6 to 8 inches long and the cones are 6 to 8 inches long. It grows about 1.5 to 2 feet/year and lives about 350 to 500 years. It needs a good quality soil that is sandy or silty or a good quality clay that is moist or average in water content. However, I have seen wild trees growing in draining wet soils. Acid soil is best of pH 4.5 to 6.5, but it does fine up to about pH of 7.0. It does not do well in heavy construction soils of new developments. It is sensitive towards road salt, pollution, strong drought, and hot, dry strong winds. In both northeast Illinois and southeast PA, I have seen most planted trees doing good, but some get stunt and yellowing and slowly die out in a bad spot with heavy soil, poor drainage, or being alkaline.

Grows sometimes to the height of 200 feet.

It has smooth bark and the needles are in groups of five, 3-5 inches long.

Cones are elongated with no prickles.

A very beautiful tree that provides shelter and food for wildlife and a nice accent for the landscape. The negative for this is that it is very susceptible to limb loss in storms, especially heavy snow. If considering planting, don't plant it near anything you care about, ie. gardens, houses, cars, etc. I grew one for a few growing seasons and it grew 44' in that time. We cut it down a couple years ago because of all the damage we saw in the area the prior winter. It was too close to the house and I had planted a bunch of shrubs in the future drop zone of its limbs. In the fall they have a heavy drop of needles, which I think makes for great mulch and/or compost. I regularly collect them from neighbors to lay over my gardens for the winter.
