Tufted Hair-grass is a rhizomatous bunchgrass with a mounding habit. It has narrow, fine-textured foliage that is usually evergreen. It produces airy panicles of florets with hair-like awns. The florets begin green-purple and then become buff in color. This is a cool season grass. It grows in moist or wet soils. It adapts to a wide range of soils. It should be cut down in late winter to allow better growth of the early spring foliage. It is sold by a good number of native plant nurseries.
