There are about 12 species of Ninebarks classified from North America and East Asia. The generic scientific name of Physocarpus comes from the Greek word of "Physa" meaning "bladder" and the Greek word of "Karpos" for fruit; thus "bladder fruit" referring to the dry, 4-parted, inflated (capsules) follicles looking bladder-like. They bear small white or pinkish 5-petal flowers in clusters and the buds and leaves are alternate. The common name of Ninebark comes from the bark of these deciduous shrubs having varied bark characteristics of being smooth, exfoliating, peeling, papery sheets, ridge-like, tan, creamy, grey, darker brown, orange-brown, and such. Members of the Rose Family being closely related to Spireas.
