    Beurré de Rance — Voici encore un fruit de premier ordre, découvert en 1762, au village de Rance (Hainaut), par notre illustre pomologue, l'abbé d'Hardenpont.
    C'est un beau fruit allongé, obtus aux deux extrémités, à peau d'un vert très foncé, devenant vert jaunâtre à la maturité, qui a lieu de mars à mai.
    La chair est blanc verdâtre, fine, de qualité variable cependant selon le sol et l'exposition; dans un bon terrain, fertile et chaud, à exposition du levant ou au midi, on pourra cueillir des poires Beurré de Rance de toute première qualité, sucrées, légèrement vineuses, avec un parfum délicat. Dans ces conditions, on peut aussi cultiver le Beurré de Rance sous forme de pyramide. Les fruits en sont presque âpres dans les terrains très froids. On greffe de préférence cet arbre sur franc de semis.

    English Translation:
    Beurré de Rance — Here is another fruit of the first order, discovered in 1762, in the village of Rance (Hainaut), by our illustrious pomologist, the Abbot of Hardenpont.
    It is a beautiful elongated fruit, obtuse at both ends, with a very deep green skin, becoming yellowish green when it matures, at some time between March to May.
    The fine, greenish-white flesh is of uneven quality, however, because it depends on the soil and the exposure; in a good field, fertile and warm, with an eastern or southern exposure, one can pick Beurré de Rance pears of first quality, sweet, slightly winey, with a delicate perfume. Under these conditions, one can also cultivate the Beurré de Rance in pyramid form. The fruits are almost bitter in very cold soils. This variety does best grafted to seedlings.
