Big Z is a type 2 pollinator requiring a type 1 pollinator for nut production. Big Z is also known as "Zink". It was propagated from a native selection around 1905 by J.W. Zink of Orange Grove, Mississippi.
Big Z was planted in the "Old Variety Test" in 1921. You can read about it here:

Keep in mind when considering this cultivar that the data for it reflect its cultivation in those early years when practices were quite different from today.
Average nuts per pound is 64 and average kernel is 49%. The yields have been good under good management, but the kernel color keeps it from being a candidate for sales as "whole pecans," so it is for use only as chopped pieces.
Overall, this cultivar is not recommended for commercial groves in the southeast. As far as that goes, there are better, newer cultivars for the home yard.
