This Wild Hydrangeavine or Wood Vamp is native to Virginia into Florida to Louisiana usually found in bottomlands and along streams. I've only seen one large woody vine (liana) on a large oak tree at Jenkins Arboretum in southeast Pennsylvania in Zone 6b. It is reported as being present at Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL, west of Chicago. It climbs by aerial roots from its gray-brown barked stems. It has lustrous dark green foliage that turns pale cream-yellow later in autumn. The fragrant white flower clusters bloom in May-June. This woody vine is not so unmanageable as many are. It does not like drought.
