All About Scallions & Chives

Almost any onions sown from seed can be scallions (also called bunching onions, green onions, spring onions or green tails). Plant them thickly, pick them young, and you've got scallions.
Sphagnum Moss vs. Peat Moss

If there ever is confusion concerning plant products, interpreting the labeling of sphagnum moss and peat moss is high on the list.
Growing Mint

The mint family offers a tremendous diversity of refreshing scents and flavors for cooking, beverages, and potpourris. Bumblebees and other pollinators are attracted to the delicate flowers that appear in mid- to late summer. Some varieties sport variegated foliage for added interest in the herb garden.
Transplanting Annuals

Annuals -- plants that sprout, bloom, set seeds, and die in one growing season -- provide some of the brightest and most reliable colors in the landscape.
Herb Gardening in Containers

Fresh herbs usually provide the best flavor. An easy way to keep fresh herbs handy for cooking is to grow them in containers. Set your containers outside close to the kitchen so it's easy to dash out and snip a few sprigs as you need them. You can even grow them right in the kitchen if you have a sunny window or a place to set them under a grow light. In cold climates, the outdoor containers of some herbs can be moved indoors when the temperatures drop for year-round harvest.
There's Always Space for Another Garden

There's room for another garden or two in just about everyone's yard. Maybe you've been dreaming of a small vegetable patch or new perennial planting. Or perhaps there's a section of ground bordering a path, driveway, or fence that's too small to mow and a hassle to maintain. Now is the time to build the new gardens you've been dreaming of. Remember, no space is too small for a few attractive plants!
