Houseplants 101

It isn't necessary to turn your house into a tropical jungle to get the most from houseplants. In fact, just a few well-placed, well-grown houseplants can contribute a lived-in coziness to any room.
How to Grow and Care for Hoyas

Hoyas are easy-care houseplants popular for their attractive foliage and fragrant blooms. Long favored by generations of houseplant aficionados, hoyas are experiencing a surge in popularity as more gardeners embrace indoor growing. The common name, wax plant, refers to the succulent, waxy leaves and flowers. Most hoyas produce long vines and grow well in hanging baskets or trained to a trellis.
Autumn Leaves are Garden Gold

Many people think only about raking chores when they ponder fall leaves. But savvy gardeners know that these leaves are packed with valuable nutrients and organic matter, and thus are perfect for amending garden soil. Fall leaves are, in effect, a source of free organic fertilizer -- if those nutrients were bagged and sold, you'd pay money for them.
Choosing and Planting a Living Christmas Tree

I remember my parents planting future Christmas trees and watching them grow along with us. It's a perfect excuse to embellish your landscape. Here are a few things to keep in mind about purchasing, displaying, and planting a living Christmas tree.
Forcing Paper White Narcissus

Fragrant paperwhites are a popular holiday plant, often enjoyed alongside amaryllis and poinsettias. Although they're hardy only in USDA Zones 8-11, they are easy to grow indoors. And, unlike other narcissus, they don't require a chilling period to bloom.
Holiday Cactus

Both Thankgiving cactus and Christmas cactus respond to the shortening days of autumn by setting buds in preparation for a holiday show of flowers. Thanksgiving cactus just responds about a month sooner. Although these plants are true cacti, they do not hail from the desert, but rather are native to the Brazilian rainforest. So what, exactly, makes a cactus a cactus? As is often the case in plant classifications, it's all about the flowers.
Semi-Homemade Gifts

I'm taking my inspiration for this year's holiday gifts from my garden from the Food Network's TV show, Semi-Homemade Cooking, during which the host shares her techniques for combining fresh ingredients with store-bought items. So this holiday season I'll use whatever I can salvage from a drought-stressed garden and combine it with store-bought items.
